Scope

Wroclaw-Bonn Workshop on Surface Physics and Chemistry 2006

is to be held in March 23-26 and is organized, for the first time, by the University of Wrocław- the Department of Electron Spectroscopy and Surface Theory Group of the Institute of Experimental Physics. The Wrocław-Bonn Workshop will take place in the Institute of Experimental Physics, pl. M. Borna 9, PL 50-205 Wrocław, Halls no. 60, 503 and 119.

The aim of the workshop is to develop a closer cooperation between the Electron Spectroscopy, and Surface Theory groups of the Institute of Experimental Physics of the University of Wrocław and those of the Institute of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn as well as to determine common goals in the research area of joint interest by considering current capabilities of both Institutes. The idea to organize such meetings appeared during fellowship of Dr. Aleksander Krupski (in the period 2003-2005) in the research group of Professor Dr. Klaus Wandelt at the Bonn University. Wrocław-Bonn Workshop on Surface Physics and Chemistry is going to take place each year alternately in Wrocław and in Bonn. These events are intended to offer a unique opportunity for young scientists, postgraduate and undergraduate students from both Institutes to give a talk on their research topics and results for an international audience. During the three-day Workshop 2006 there will be 30 talks given and 21 posters presented during a poster session.

Moreover, during the Workshop 2006 a bilateral agreement will be signed for the years 2006-2008 between the University of Wrocław and the University of Bonn regarding student exchange within SOCRATES/ERASMUS programs which enable the exchange of postgraduate students between the Institute for Physical and Theoretical Chemistry of Bonn and the Institute of Experimental Physics of Wrocław. Also, there will be discussed a joint Polish-German research project within the framework of the agreement signed on the 5th of December 2005 by the Polish Ministry of Education and Science (MEiN) and the German Research Foundation (DFG) concerning the deepening of scientific cooperation and partnership between Poland and Germany.

In addition, participants of the Workshop will visit the laboratories of the Institute of Experimental Physics. Fife labs of the Department of Electron Spectroscopy will be visited including the one which is now built. This lab is going to be equipped with the low-temperature vacuum scanning tunneling microscope (LT-STM) and the electrochemical scanning tunneling microscope (EC-STM). There will be also a wonderful opportunity for the participants to have an organized trip over the monuments of art in this old city.
